Building Scalable Web Apps with Next.js

Next.js has evolved far beyond a simple React framework. With the introduction of the App Router, it offers a new paradigm for building web applications that are both powerful and maintainable.

In this post, I'll walk through the architecture decisions I've made when building scalable applications with Next.js, focusing on the patterns that have proven most effective in production.

The key to scalability in Next.js lies in understanding when to use server components versus client components. Server components are rendered on the server and sent as HTML, reducing the JavaScript bundle size significantly. Client components, on the other hand, are interactive and run in the browser.

Another critical pattern is data fetching. With Next.js, you can fetch data directly in server components, use React's cache function to deduplicate requests, and leverage streaming for progressive rendering.

By following these patterns, you can build applications that are fast, scalable, and maintainable — without sacrificing developer experience.
